Child dies in mobile home fire

COLUMBUS — A mobile home fire has claimed the life of a 3-year-old child.

Authorities say the mobile home was fully engulfed by the time firefighters arrived Tuesday night.

Lowndes County Coroner Greg Merchant said Landon Lowell Boyles-Jordan was found inside the home and pronounced dead at the scene.

Merchant said the child’s father, A.J. Jordan, told authorities that he stayed inside and tried to put the fire out, thinking his son was safe outside. As the fire spread, he went outside, calling for the child, who could not be found. He then went back inside to look for him, but by then, the smoke and fire was overwhelming.

The state Fire Marshal’s office has been called in to determine the cause of the fire.
