CORINTH – Attracting world champions to Corinth’s chili festival in only its second year is a real triumph for festival organizers.
During Saturday’s Crossroads Festival and Mississippi Regional Chili Cookoff at the Crossroads Arena, visitors can be chili-tasters during the “People’s Choice” event from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. For a $2 donation they can check out various chilis prepared by local cooks.
Chili cooks can join festival-goers to explore a variety of arts and crafts vendors and enjoy a stage of entertainment that continues until 9 p.m.
Along with headliner Jason D. Williams, whom people say appeals to Jerry Lee Lewis fans, the Midnight Riders – an Allman Brothers tribute band – will take the stage.
The main event, however, features competition for top honors in red chili, chili verde and salsa recipes among International Chili Society members for cash awards. These winners will qualify to compete in ICS’s world championships in each category.
Returning 2008 Corinth winner, retired airline pilot Jim Stoddard of Dallas, will have his “Alien Chili,” which won fifth place in the ICS world championship in Las Vegas in October.
Joining him at this year’s festival is reigning red chili world champion Georgia Weller, who will compete in Corinth’s green chili category. Weller’s husband, Jim, also a world-champion chili cook, will join her in Corinth.
