COTTON PLANT – Steven Paul doesn’t think he’s crazy, nor does he think he has an obsession, but he’s happy to appear on the TLC show “My Crazy Obsession.”
Paul and his family will appear on the Dec. 1 Christmas episode that will run at 8 p.m. and 11 p.m. The real stars will be the Pauls’ collection of inflatable holiday decorations.
“I’ve got over 500 inflatables,” Paul said. “My collection started seven years ago.”
A TV crew visited the Pauls’ Christmas display last year, and spent three days gathering footage. “It was kind of stressful because they were there for every moment until 10 or 11 o’clock at night,” he said.
In addition to Paul, 39, the crew interviewed his wife, Christy, 39, and their sons, Collin, 9, and Joshua, 8.
“They interviewed a lot of people who were at the display,” Paul said, “so there are a lot of local people.”
He won’t see the episode until it airs, so there’s no telling what will make the final cut. The Pauls’ display includes lights and a Santa’s village, but the crew was focused on the inflatables.
You don’t have to rely on TLC. The Christmas extravaganza is open to the public. If you’re traveling north from New Albany on Highway 15 at night, look for the stunning collection of bright lights on the right just past the Cotton Plant line.
The display will be open from 6 to 9 p.m. today, as well as Nov. 29-30, Dec. 1, 6, 7 and 8. It also will be open from Dec. 13 to Dec. 25, except for Dec. 24.
“We’re having choirs to sing this year,” Paul said. “We did that last year because the TV people asked us to do it. They wanted that, and we’re bringing it back.”
