Church Street students learn perform for their parents

TUPELO – Students at Church Street Elementary have done a lot of dancing lately.
During January, all of the students at the kindergarten to second-grade school combined their physical education and music classes to learn different dances. They practiced the dances twice a week the whole month and performed them for their families last week.
The students did several different dances, such as the bus stop, the hokeypokey, boom boom pow, the Texas turnaround, seven jumps and a flash light dance to the Olympic fanfare, Church Street music teacher Linda Austin said.
“The kids learn such things as patterns, working together and moving in rhythm,” Austin said. “They also get a chance to perform in front of their parents and peers, and the kids get excited about that.”
