CLAY COUNTY RED CROSS CHAPTER RECHARTERED

WEST POINT – After three years of planning, the Clay County Chapter of the American Red Cross has recharted and is hoping to expand its services.

Sue Womack, director for the Clay County chapter, said the office has been open for the last four years, but the nine board members felt the organization needed to be rechartered so additional services could be offered. The Clay County chapter was originally chartered in 1917, but services were offered on a sporadic basis. Officials with the Clay County Red Cross announced the recharter this week. Official approval was granted in February.

One of the first and biggest jobs was to develop a Clay County Disaster Plan, Womack said. This plan contains information on what to do in any type of disaster.

The recharter also has to meet numerous requirements from the national, regional and state offices of the American Red Cross.

Some of the service that are currently offered by the Clay County Red Cross, which is a United Way agency, include assisting in any type of disaster; assisting a family if a home burns; cardiopulmonary resuscitation and first aid courses; and, assisting military personnel and their families.
