Clay County woman's effort to clear name backfires

WEST POINT — A Clay County woman’s appeal of a fine for running over a Starkville bicyclist didn’t go as she planned.

Robbie Norton of the Cedar Bluff community originally was found guilty last November of misdemeanor negligent driving in justice court and was fined $50. Starkville cyclist and business owner Jan Morgan was struck and injured as she and a friend biked along Mississippi Highway 50 in western Clay County last May.

Norton appealed to circuit court.

WCBI-TV reports that following a bench trial Monday, Judge Jim Kitchens found Norton guilty of simple assault, fined her $250 and gave her a six-month suspended jail sentence.

Kitchens says Norton also must contact the Department of Public Safety about doing public service announcements about drivers being careful around bicycles on the road.
