OXFORD — The Lafayette County Board of Supervisors has reduced the property tax assessment on the Whirlpool Corporation’s empty building and idle land from $13 million to $7.75 million.
While Whirlpool was open, it was exempt from paying ad valorem taxes — except for school taxes — as an industry incentive. Once it closed its doors in 2009, the company lost the exemption and was charged taxes on an assessed value of $13 million.
The Oxford Eagle reports supervisors acted this week on recommendations from an accountant hired by Whirlpool and County Tax Assessor/Collector Martha Thornton.
