Coin toss decides Rienzi alderman

By NEMS Daily Journal

RIENZI – The town of Rienzi has chosen a fifth alderman to fill the final seat on the city board, and Harold W. Palmer has won the post.
Town officials learned last week from the secretary of state’s office that the tie vote between incumbent Palmer, with 45 votes, and incumbent Melissa Bearden Morgan, 45 votes, had to be decided by a coin toss or a straw pull, so the June 18 runoff election was canceled.
At 5 p.m. Friday the town election commissioners held a coin toss, with two town citizens conducting the toss. The election commissioners chose heads for Palmer and tails for Bearden, with the coin landing on heads.
