This American Life, the weekly hour-long radio program produced by Chicago Public Radio and hosted by Ira Glass, might be causing some major heartburn in Atlanta.
The show released the exact ingredients from a photo that is purported to show the recipe for Coca-Cola.
The recipe has been a closely guarded secret at the Atlanta-based Cola company for a century, reportedly locked in a vault. The world-famous drink was created by pharmacist John Pemberton in 1886.
But This American life found a photograph appearing in the 1979 edition of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that shows someone holding open a book that with a recipe purported to be an exact replica of Pemberton’s mix.
Here is the recipe:
Fluid extract of Coca 3 drams USP
Citric acid 3 oz.
Caffeine 1 oz.
Water 2.5 gal.
Lime juice 2 pints 1 qrt.
Vanilla 1 oz.
Caramel 1.5 oz. or more to color
7X flavor (use 2 oz. of flavor to 5 gals. syrup)
Alcohol 8 oz.
Orange oil 20 drops
Lemon oil 30 drops
Nutmeg oil 10 drops
Coriander 5 drops
Neroli 10 drops
Cinnamon 10 drops
