JACKSON — The Mississippi Democratic Party announced Monday that it has appointed Rickey Cole as its new executive director.
Cole replaces Travis Brock, who held the job the past several months.
Cole, who’s 45, has homes in Jackson and Ovett. He was the state Democratic Party chairman from 2001 through 2004 and ran unsuccessfully for state agriculture commissioner in 2007 and U.S. Senate in 2000.
Cole told The Associated Press last week that he’d like to run for the state Democratic chairmanship again when that position is open. The current chairman, Jamie Franks of Mooreville, lost a Democratic primary runoff last week as he tried to regain a state House seat he previously held.
The executive director is the party’s paid administrator. The chairman leads the party’s policy-making and fundraising efforts.
