JACKSON — The State College Board has taken an initial look at a proposal to raise campus housing fees at the eight Mississippi public universities.
The Clarion-Ledger reports that the board took no action Thursday.
A preliminary proposal shows average annual rates could climb over the next three years from $3,862 currently to $4,476.
Dorm prices have steadily risen over the past decade. The average rate for Mississippi universities in 2000 was $1,886.
Higher Education Commissioner Hank Bounds says he is hoping the board will approve a multiyear schedule of increases so parents and students can know ahead of time what housing fees will be at least through 2014.
