Dan Mullen will meet an old friend on New Year’s Day.

Mullen’s Mississippi State squad was chosen on Sunday to play in the Gator Bowl against Northwestern of the Big Ten. It will be the Bulldogs’ second trip to the Jacksonville, Fla., game in three years, and their first meeting with the Wildcats.

The game kicks off at 11 a.m. on Jan. 1 and will be televised by ESPN2.

Northwestern (9-3) is coached by Pat Fitzgerald, who like Mullen has put together a solid program. The two have known each other for years, going back to when Mullen was an assistant coach at Utah and Fitzgerald an assistant at Northwestern.

OXFORD – A week of speculation about destinations ended Sunday evening when Ole Miss accepted an invitation to the BBVA Compass Bowl in Birmingham.

The Rebels, in a bowl game for the first time since 2009, will play Pittsburgh, which will be playing in its third consecutive Compass Bowl.

Kickoff at Legion Field on Jan. 5 is at noon. The game will be televised by ESPN.

There were scenarios that could have sent the Rebels to Nashville for the Music City Bowl, but once the Gator Bowl selected Northwestern as its Big 10 representative, the dominoes fell, and Ole Miss landed in Birmingham.

It’s a landing that suits the Rebels quite fine, Ole Miss athletics director Ross Bjork said.
