SALTILLO – The North Mississippi Coca-Cola Junior Golf tour kicked off its first week Tuesday at the Natchez Trace Golf Club.
Cason Collins got off to a good start, shooting an 81 to win the 16-18 year-old division.
The short game was good for Collins.
“My chipping really saved me today. I hit a lot of fairways, but I didn’t put it on the greens like I wanted to,” said Collins.
Alyssa Trulove won the girls division by shooting a 108.
“It was a pretty hard day, but overall it was fun. I’m really looking forward to participating in the tour this year,” Trulove said.
Cohen Trolio claimed boys 10-11 division by shooting a 39 on eight holes, while Tate Dickerson took the lead the first week with an 82 to win his 14-15 boys division.
Collins had no complaints about the course.
“The course was in great shape today. It was dry even though it has been a little wet lately. The greens played fast and rolled good.”
Hole No. 5 was just about the only hole that gave Collins trouble.
“That was just a tough hole, because the pin was in a tough spot. It was difficult to hit the green down there.
Also in the 16-18s, Jacob Dixon placed second with an 84, and Kirk Reeder placed third with an 89.
The summer tour runs for eight weeks with stops at a number of Northeast Mississippi courses.
All age groups on the tour will resume play next week at the Pontotoc Country Club.
The tour championship is July 30-31 at the Starkville Country Club.
It will include the top eight in the point standings for each division.
