Columbus to accept bids for new meters

By The Associated Press

COLUMBUS — Columbus Light and Water will seek new bids for automated electricity and water meters.

CL&W general manager Todd Gale tells The Commercial Dispatch that the system the city was testing has proved to be inadequate.

Gale says a request for new bids will be sent out in May and will go to city leaders in June.

Gale says the installation of the backbone of the communication system for the meters would begin in July if all goes as planned.

Gale says the system initially tested — and didn’t work — was a radio-based system.

Gale says he prefers a web-based system that would allow households and business owners to control energy use over an Internet connection. He says it would mirror a system used by the Tennessee Valley Authority.
