TUPELO – Comcast is almost finished switching its Tupelo customers to digital service, a Comcast executive said Thursday.
For the past few months, the company has been converting signals from analog to digital on a neighborhood-by-neighborhood basis. The digital signal gives customers more high-definition channels, standard-definition channels and video-on-demand options.
On Tuesday, Comcast did the second-to-last switch for Tupelo.
“Tupelo is totally digital above channel 13,” said Don Richey, Comcast’s VP and general manager for north Alabama and Mississippi.
The local channels – 2 through 13 – are tentatively slated to be switched to digital May 22, said Richey.
The last switch will be for customers who subscribe to Comcast’s limited basic plan, said Patricia Collins, Comcast’s senior director of government affairs for the Delta area.
Richey and Collins were the guest speakers at the Thursday meeting of the Tupelo Luncheon Civitan Club.
Right now, customers need a digital converter box to see channels 14 and up. After the last switch, customers will need a digital converter box on every television to see any channels, Collins said.

Comcast originally had planned to convert its Northeast Mississippi customers to digital service in August 2010. The switch was delayed and didn’t start until February 2011.
Corinth’s switch still hasn’t started.
The digital switch also includes an upgrade to faster Internet service. Basic speeds will double once the Internet switch is made. Collins said Comcast hopes to convert Tupelo’s Internet service in August.
