Itawamba County business owners are about to start paying more for garbage pickup.
Starting in June, the commercial solid waste pickup rates countywide are going up. The amount of the increase varies depending upon the type of pickup a business receives. Price increases range from $3 to $6.
Itawamba County supervisors voted in favor of the increase during their regular meeting last week. The increased rates will take effect June 1.
For businesses using commercial industrial dumpsters, the monthly cost has increased to $25 for a two-yard dumpster, $30 for a four-yard dumpster and $40 for a six-yard dumpster. These increases range from $5 to $10 over the previous rates.
Commercial hand pickup services will be increasing from $3 to $6 over previous rates. The new rates are $15 for up to five bags; $28 for six to 10 bags; and $39 for 11 to 15 bags. Cart pickup is also increasing to $16 per month.
The cost of renting a temporary dumpster from the county is also going up. Currently the cost is only $5 for the delivery and pickup of a two-yard dumpster. The rate is jumping to $25 for a month’s rental. The cost for a 4-yard and 6-yard dumpster is also increasing to $30 and $40, respectively. A new $1 per day surcharge after the 30 days are up is also being implemented.
The increase in the price of the county’s commercial garbage pickup piggybacks on an increase in the county’s residential pickup rates. Earlier this year, the board voted to raise residential pickup from $10 to $13 per month to help cover the solid waste department’s rising expenses.
