HOUSTON – Aldermen have taken the first step into putting some teeth into fighting juvenile crime in Houston.
The Board of Mayor and Aldermen will meet later this month to flesh out a program that will let youth court sentence offenders from Houston to community service.
Donna Schomburg of COPES, a program that deals with at-risk kids, said she has been working with youth court Judge Richard Bennett to develop a community service program that will put offenders to work washing police cars, picking up trash or doing minor maintenance at city facilities.
She said the program she and Bennett have tentatively put together would have kids sentenced to work off fines.
