RIPLEY – Tippah County voters on Tuesday approved a proposal to reconsolidate the positions of tax assessor and tax collector.
The final vote was 3,212 for and 2,374 against.
The position of tax assessor-collector was separated in 2002 by order of the board. In 2003, Rhonda Reno was elected tax assessor and Joe Larry Shackelford became the tax collector.
Last year, the Board of Supervisors decided to allow voters to decide whether to reunite the positions. With voters recombining the offices, neither incumbent is immediately affected since their current terms do not end until January 2013.
Supporters of the combined office claim that eliminating one position would save money. However, Reno and Shackelford claim that the responsibilities of the two offices are too great for one person.
