Controlled burns along Natchez Trace set for this week

djournal-lee-countyWeather permitting, the Natchez Trace Parkway will conduct three controlled burns Wednesday through Friday in Lee County.

One of the prescribed fires will temporarily close the Blackland Prairie section of the National Scenic Trail between McCullough Boulevard and Highway 78. Another of the fires will also temporarily close the northern trailhead near Beech Springs Road.

Warning signs will be placed along the Trace, and motorists are advised to travel at a safe speed and with headlights on when smoke is visible. If visibility is less than 500 feet, a portion of the parkway may be closed until the smoke clears.

The burns are used to manage the forests and grasslands that line the Trace.
