Corinth animal shelter to stay open

CORINTH – Board members of the Corinth-Alcorn County Humane Society will be working feverishly through Sunday to place animals now housed at the county shelter.
In June the humane society board voted “to cease operation of the shelter until a more suitable, safe and appropriate facility can be purchased or constructed,” as it states on the group’s website at www.cachs.org. “We are actively seeking assistance with this effort.”
“We won’t be here Monday but were assured there would be other volunteers here,” said board President Katie Dalton.
Board members recently asked Corinth, Farmington and Alcorn County officials – representatives of the government entities that support the facility for about $100,000 per year – to help them relocate the shelter to temporary space, something the city and county representatives said they do not have. The current shelter is a county-owned building.
The plan now, said Corinth Street Commissioner Jim Bynum, is to have an alternate nonprofit group operate the shelter, which also is used by the city animal control officer.
“Starting Monday, the shelter will be available for animal control pickup for lost and homeless animals, but will not take any voluntary surrenders,” said Bynum.
While other volunteers will work with director Katherine Gardner to run the shelter beginning Monday, facility changes also are in the works, said Corinth Mayor Tommy Irwin.
“It may be a little inconvenient for people for a time,” Irwin said, while the building’s interior is rebuilt.
New materials are expected to rectify many of the sub-par conditions the humane society board said warranted a new facility. Among the problems they identified were faulty wiring and walls and floors made of materials which could not be properly sanitized.
Irwin and Bynum said they hope the renovation work will be complete in several weeks to resume full operation of the shelter.
Meanwhile, the nearest animal shelters in Northeast Mississippi are in Oxford and Tupelo.
