Corinth Comcast customers promised service upgrade

CORINTH – With an across-the-board conversion of its cable service to all-digital, Comcast Cable will be giving many of its customers an automatic upgrade.
The improved service is scheduled to take effect on Nov. 15, a Comcast representative told the Corinth city board this week.
Customers who currently receive Limited Basic and Expanded Basic service will be transitioned to Expanded Basic service on a neighborhood-by-neighborhood basis, said Patricia Collins of the company’s Huntsville office. This service will require either a digital converter box or digital terminal adapter to receive programming, and Comcast will provide up to two of the digital terminal adapters at no charge. Each additional adapter will cost $1.99 per month.
Comcast is calling this new level of service “The World of More,” which they say will allow the cable provider to offer more high-definition programming, increased Internet speeds and a wider range of choices.
“Our commitment to the communities in which we provide cable service is to provide schools, libraries and certain government buildings … with one outlet per building of complimentary service,” says the company’s letter to customers. “While we know and understand that some buildings may have more than one outlet, we will offer up to two free digital terminal adapters for those television sets that currently receive Comcast service.”
Mayor Tommy Irwin noted that as he and the aldermen campaigned for office last year they promised transparency in their actions. While they would like to broadcast board meetings regularly, purchasing the equipment with city funds is cost-prohibitive. Irwin asked Collins if there is any help the cable company can give in making television broadcast of meetings available to the public.
Collins responded that in the months until Comcast’s franchise agreement with the city of Corinth expires in December 2012, they will work with city officials in whatever ways possible to help them achieve that goal.
