CORINTH – A suspect is in custody but no charges have been filed yet in connection with the Friday evening shooting death of a Corinth man.

Sylvester Fernando, 38, died at Magnolia Regional Health Center about 7 p.m. after suffering several gunshot wounds, said police Chief David Lancaster.

He declined to identify the suspect at this time and said any charges would not be filed until Monday.

According to Fernando’s son, a witness to the incident, he and his father had gone to the convenience store at Cass and Meigg Streets. As the two left the convenience store, Fernando saw a man he recognized sitting in a car and went over to talk with him. The two men began arguing, the witness said, and the alleged shooter got out of the car with a gun, and the two men struggled over the gun before it fired and hit the victim. Reportedly, the suspect continued to fire the gun at Fernando.

Fernando was transported to Magnolia Regional Health Center, where he later died.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the Corinth Police Department at (662) 286-3377.
