CORINTH – The first liquor store to be approved under a new city ordinance opened in Corinth over the weekend.
Corinth Wine and Spirits, at 3113 Shiloh Road, opened late Friday, getting a head start on at least two other package liquor and wine stores expected to open by the end of the week.
The Twisted Cork, at 108 Highway 72 West, also has received its permit from the Mississippi Alcohol Beverage Control Board, and expects to open later this week, as has Wholesale Liquor, at 414 S. Cass St.
More than half a dozen package stores and a number of restaurants for on-premise sales have applied for ABC permits and are awaiting approval.
An ABC spokeswoman said recently that the agency is processing the Corinth requests as expeditiously as possible with the limited staffing they have and the several areas they must investigate before permits are approved.
The city approved an ordinance under a new state law that permits cities of a certain size in dry counties to hold a referendum and offer liquor and wine for sale with at least 60 percent voter approval.
