NEW ALBANY – All indications are that the inmate found dead Wednesday in the Union County Jail on Wednesday committed suicide, said Union County Coroner Mark Golding.
Brandon L. McCurdy, 26, of 1043 C. R. 140, was found hanged with a blanket about 10 a.m.
“With him being in the cell by himself, everything points to suicide,” Golding said, adding that he would await preliminary reports from the autopsy before making that the official cause of death. McCurdy’s body was to be autopsied Thursday, but preliminary results were not expected until today.
McCurdy had been arrested Tuesday night on unspecified charges that Sheriff Tommy Wilhite said were related to an apparent crystal meth operation. He had also been arrested last Friday on charges of possession of marijuana and possession of a Schedule III narcotic and had been released the next day on bond. McCurdy also had two misdemeanor arrests in 2008.
Wilhite said Thursday that he will review jail procedures, probably adding a policy to put all meth-related arrestees on suicide watch. An investigation into the death is being headed by the Mississippi Department of Public Safety, which is standard procedure statewide.
McCurdy’s was the second recent death of a young inmate at the Union County facility. On March 31, 19-year-old Janice Nichols of Guntown collapsed in a shower at the jail and was pronounced dead after being taken to a nearby hospital.
