TUPELO – The Tupelo City Council unanimously voted tonight to award a demolition contract of $135,839 to eliminate the former Milam Manufacturing building.

The move advances the process for the site considered the likely location for a new Tupelo Police Department headquarters.

The council, Mayor Jason Shelton and other city officials will meet in coming weeks to discuss details for a new police headquarters.

The city has about $5 million set aside for a new facility. Federal law enforcement donated the old Milam property to the city after the facility was used in a cigarette scheme to avoid paying taxes.
