Counterfeit money a problem in Miss. Delta

By The Associated Press

GREENWOOD — Funny money is circulating in the Mississippi Delta.

Kevin Hayes of the Greenwood Police Department says several local businesses, including a liquor store and at least one fast-food restaurant, have been hit with counterfeit bills lately.

He tells the Greenwood Commonwealth that this happens about once a year in the city.

Hayes says sometimes people make the fake money by using photocopiers that print on both sides of a piece of paper. Other times, they bleach out a $5 bill and then copy a $50 bill over it — a method that can be harder to detect because it feels real.

He says people can file police reports if they receive counterfeit money, but there’s no guarantee they’ll be reimbursed for a loss.
