RIPLEY – Country artist Randy Owen is bringing his musical talent and concern for kids to Ripley on April 10 for a concert to benefit Ripley’s Boys & Girls Club.
The event, co-sponsored by The Peoples Bank, will be at the Ripley High School Event Center.
As lead singer of the legendary country rock group Alabama, Owen helped the group earn its place in the Country Music Hall of Fame with more than 150 industry awards, sales of more than 73 million albums and 42 No. 1 singles.
“We heard him in a concert back in the fall as we began planning this event, and his show will be a fun night for everyone,” said Mary Childs, board president for Boys & Girls Clubs of North Mississippi, with clubs in Tupelo, Houston, New Albany, Oxford and Ripley.
Childs’ family has known Owen for quite some time.
“My father talked with him about the possibility of doing this concert, and he agreed,” Childs said.
Though the band Alabama announced its retirement in 2002 and performed farewell concerts through 2003, Owen has continued making music with his own band and raising money for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, which has been close to his heart for many years.
“Boys & Girls Clubs are fortunate to have him helping us raise money for children in this community,” said Boys & Girls Club spokeswoman Evie Storey Boyd. “As it says in our mission statement, Boys & Girls Clubs of North Mississippi wants to enable all young people to realize their full potential as productive, responsible and caring citizens.”
The Ripley club serves about 175 youths with homework help and a variety of activities and programs. Based at Ripley Elementary School, members range in age up through high school.
Almost 50 tickets have been sold for a special meet-and-greet with Owen after the performance, but no more tickets are available for that special event, Childs said.
