GULFPORT — A Louisiana couple arrested on animal cruelty charges in Mississippi now face similar charges in Louisiana, authorities say.
Sharon Merritt, 59, and her boyfriend, Todd Klibert, 55, were arrested in Metairie, La., on Friday when they arrived home after their release from Hancock County jail, Sheriff Ricky Adam tells the Sun Herald.
Hancock County animal control officer Colin Freeman says Jefferson Parish authorities awaited the couple when they arrived from Mississippi. They found about 20 cats and dogs there, which Merritt surrendered to officers, Adam says.
Merritt and Klibert were jailed in Hancock County Wednesday after authorities found 182 animals — cats, dogs, rabbits, chickens, ducks, turkeys and quail — at Merritt’s property in Kiln, Miss.
All 82 cats were euthanized. Most remaining animals have been adopted.
