TUPELO – The Tupelo Convention and Visitors Bureau has hired Seth Gaines as the new director of sports development.
Gaines replaces Matt Wyatt, who left last month to work with Mississippi State University.
Gaines is the current director of athletic events with Tupelo’s Parks and Recreation Department. He starts work at the CVB April 25.
The CVB created the position years ago to market and promote Tupelo as a destination in the sports travel industry. Prior to Wyatt, the position was held by Neal McCoy, the current executive director of the CVB.
Gaines’ job responsibilities will include recruiting national sporting events, developing grassroots initiatives and representing Tupelo at industry trade shows.
“We are really excited to have someone with Seth’s experience taking on this position,” McCoy said. “We’ve worked closely with Seth over the last few years and his knowledge of our program is going to give us an advantage going into this busy sports season.”
After Wyatt turned in his resignation, the position was advertised within the city, according to city policy. Stephanie Coomer, the CVB’s deputy director, said Gaines was the only internal applicant and the only person the CVB interviewed for the position.
Gaines, a Myrtle native, is a graduate of the University of Mississippi. He worked for Parks and Rec for eight years and also was an active treatment technician at North Mississippi State Hospital.
