TUPELO – Ward 4 City Council incumbent Nettie Davis returned $500 to her sorority chapter after the national organization questioned the campaign contribution.
Davis reported the return, made May 22, in her most recent campaign finance report, which is a public record available at City Hall.
The contribution had been made two months ago from Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority’s Tupelo chapter, Nu Sigma Omega. Davis is the chapter president. The group also made a $250 contribution when Davis ran four years ago, according to a 2005 campaign finance report.
But the national sorority told the Daily Journal the contribution violated its policy of remaining nonpartisan and not endorsing any candidates. It said it would launch an investigation.
Sorority spokeswoman Melody McDowell did not immediately respond for comment on the money’s return.
According to a statement from Nu Sigma Omega, members of the chapter “were not aware of any inappropriate disbursements of funds to a political candidate.” It further said Davis was not presiding at the time the unanimous vote to donate money was made.
