The deadline for signing homestead exemption is quickly approaching according to Johnny Riley, Itawamba County tax assessor. Deadline for signing homestead exemption is April 1, 2009.
Itawamba County has an automatic renewal program. If a taxpayer has no change in his or her filing status or property, there is no need to sign homestead. The homestead exemption will be automatically applied.
Riley listed some instances in which the taxpayer will need to sign a new application. These include changes in marital status, death of a spouse, or additional property purchased that you wish to add to your homestead.
Riley also stressed to anyone who has reached age 65 on or before Jan. 1, 2009, that they will need to sign over age 65 exemption which will totally exempt them from property taxes up to 160 acres or up to $75,000 in true value, whichever comes first.
If anyone has become disabled on or before the Jan. 1, 2009 date, he or she will need to sign a disability homestead application.
Disability homestead carries the same benefits as age 65 homestead. In addition, anyone who has built a new home within the last year and has never filed homestead before will need to sign a new application on or before the cutoff date of April 1, 2009.
If anyone has a homestead question, he or she is urged to contact Riley’s office at 662-862-7598.
