Grants from the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality will help fight illegal dumps in Lee and Benton counties.
Lee County received a solid waste assistance grant of $13,078, which goes toward the salary of the county’s solid waste enforcement officer.
The officer, Shawn Hairald, is responsible for investigating complaints on illegal dumps, said Lee County administrator Sean Thompson. The grant, which the county has received for several years, pays part of Hairald’s salary.
Benton County received a $6,914 grant that will be used to clean up of unauthorized dump sites.
