HERNANDO — DeSoto County officials are moving forward with plans to lease a shooting range in neighboring Marshall County.
The Commercial Appeal reports that the DeSoto Sheriff’s Department has been offered a $2,000 a month lease on an existing firing range on 65 acres in Holly Springs. It would be used to train law enforcement officers.
DeSoto Sheriff Bill Rasco tells supervisors the facility has everything his department needs, with four ranges, moving targets, a 5,000-square-foot “shoot house” and classroom building with office space.
Rasco proposes using instructors from DeSoto County to teach classes for other agencies for a fee. He also says “lawbreakers” will help pay for the range with money that’s seized in crime cases.
Supervisors voted unanimously for the lease deal.
