DeSoto County leaders seek Senate vote

HERNANDO – DeSoto County supervisors are asking Gov. Phil Bryant to schedule a vote to fill the balance of departing state Sen. Merle Flowers’ four-year term be part of the Nov. 6 general and presidential election.
Circuit Clerk Dale Kelly Thompson said a separate special election would cost about $60,000.
Flowers, a Republican from Southaven, said last month he was resigning to spend more time with his wife and their four children.
Three candidates since have announced plans to seek the post: Kevin Blackwell, chairman of the DeSoto County Republican Party; Republican Pat Nelson, a first-term state representative from Southaven; and Mike Smith, former vice chairman of the DeSoto County Democratic Party.
