PLANTERSVILLE – Lee County Sheriff’s deputies pulled a Tupelo man out of the lake along Lakewood Road in Plantersville on Saturday afternoon.
Robert Burns of Tupelo was at the lake with friends, and according to Tony Jennings, they were leaving when Burns jumped into the lake and attempted to swim to the other side.
Sherdell Richmond, who was with Burns and Jennings, said they told Burns they were leaving but he jumped in. Richmond said he went under for a long time and she called 911.
A 3:37 p.m., three deputies arrived at the scene and jumped into the lake to pull the man out.
“Corp. (Michael) Patterson, Dep. (Casey) Bruce and Dep. (Philip) Smith jumped in and pulled him out,” said Lee County Sheriff Jim Johnson.
Emergency responders from North Mississippi Medical Center and the Richmond Volunteer Fire Department performed CPR on Burns before he was taken by ambulance to the North Mississippi Medical Center where he was in critical condition at 4:30 p.m.
