Diamond season off to a wet start

CHICKASAW COUNTY – The first full week of baseball season didn’t get off to much of a start for the local teams and for the Okolona Chiefs, it didn’t start at all.
The Houston Hilltoppers got in a game with East Webster and played in the Amory tournament over the Feb. 20-21 weekend, then had last week open until Friday when they were supposed to take on the Wolverines again. The weather didn’t cooperate with the Toppers and forced rescheduling of the East Webster game to this Thursday at 5 and 7. The Toppers double-header with Saltillo was cancelled Saturday as well.
The Okolona Chieftains came off the basketball court and headed for the diamond only to find their season opener against Smithville cancelled on Saturday. The game has been rescheduled to March 14.
The Houlka Wildcats fell to the same fate delivered by the rain and winter storm and rescheduled their match with Ingomar to March 12.
The Lady Cats saw brief action last week, falling in a shut-out to the Lady Trojans of Bruce 12-0, and were hoping to participate in the North Pontotoc tourney last weekend, but it was also cancelled due to weather.
The Toppers were scheduled to head back into action in a road game at Amory on Tuesday and will host East Webster Thursday and Louisville Friday.
The Wildcats were due to travel to Calhoun City Tuesday and will host Vardaman on Friday. The Lady Cats had a game scheduled with Tremont on Monday, depending on field conditions and are scheduled to travel to Calhoun City on Thursday.
The Chieftains were scheduled to begin the season on Tuesday hosting Tremont and will travel to Houlka for a county game on March 10.
Lady Toppers update
The Houston Lady Toppers have gotten a start on a busy season and will spend a lot of time traveling with 15 road games on their schedule. Although they missed out on the Eupora tourney, they were scheduled to travel to Ackerman on Monday and to host Eupora on Thursday.
As of Feb. 26, the Lady Toppers were posting a 4-3 record overall and 1-0 in division 2-3A.
The JV squad is off and rolling as well with a 6-1-1 record.
