TUPELO – Satellite TV provider DIRECTV on Wednesday unveiled high-definition versions of local channels in the Tupelo and Columbus market.
DIRECTV said this is the first time the local channels have been offered in HD to its customers.
As of Wednesday, these channels are now available in HD:
• WKDH/ABC on channel 45
• WCBI/CBS on channel 4
• WLOV/FOX on channel 27
• WTVA/NBC on channel 9
• WMAE/PBS on channel 12
The CW has been added on channel 5, but it is in standard definition.
To receive DIRECTV’s HD local programming, customers must have at least an H20 or HR20 DIRECTV Plus HD-DVR receiver, plus a Ka/Ku band dish.
The company said eligibility for local channels is based on service address within certain designated-market areas, as defined by Nielsen Media Research. Plus, additional fees may apply.
DIRECTV said it now offers local broadcast channels in 194 markets, representing 99 percent of U.S. TV households. Of those, it has HD in 181 markets.
