GREENWOOD, Miss. (AP) — Authorities say bond has been denied for a 70-year-old oncologist accused of hiring someone to kill the lawyer who represented his ex-wife during their divorce in the 1990s.

Dr. Ralph Arnold Smith was arrested Sunday and is charged with conspiracy to commit murder and capital murder. He made an initial court appearance Tuesday.

Authorities say Keaira Byrd, and Derrick Lacy went to Lee Abraham’s law office Saturday night, where agents from the Mississippi attorney general’s office were waiting. Byrd was killed during a shootout. Lacy was wounded in the lower back.

Abraham was not hurt, but a bullet grazed the leg one of the investigators.
