Dog at center of fatal shooting at pound

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Officials say an 8-month-old pit bull that a Texas woman was aiming for when she fatally shot her husband is still in police custody.

Jackson Police Department spokeswoman Colendula Green tells The Clarion-Ledger the dog is being held at the city pound.

Robert Walker Sr. and Betty Walker of Houston were visiting their son’s home Friday when the dog jumped the fence and came into the yard to tug on the shirttail of a 7-year-old relative who was among children outside.

Betty Walker escorted the children inside and came back with a gun. Finding her husband holding the dog, police say Betty Walker fired two shots, one of which hit her husband in the chest and the other struck the dog.

Police have said the dog’s owner could face charges.
