MEMPHIS — Dozens of visitors to Beale Street in Memphis have been turned back for violating a handgun ban on the nightlife strip.
WMC-TV reports that guards ask patrons to return their guns to their homes or cars before entering the area. PSI Security owner Leonard Porter says he’s been surprised how many weapons his officers have detected since bar and restaurant owners decided post a gun ban there.
Says Porter: “It’s just an enormous amount of people walking around with guns.”
The state Legislature this year passed a law to allow people with handgun carry permits to bring their weapons into establishments that serve alcohol. But the law allows for owners to continue to ban guns at their bars and restaurants.
