RIPLEY – A Ripley area man was injured after his vehicle overturned and pinned him Tuesday night west of Ripley, Tippah authorities said this week.

Bradley Gates, 37, of County Road 805 Ripley, was injured when his southbound Jeep ran off the west side of County Road 424 and overturned. The vehicle came to rest atop Gates in a ditch, pinning him but not crushing him, a deputy said.

Rescue Squad firefighters from Ripley and Gravestown along with Tippah County Ambulance Service personnel, lifted the vehicle off Gates. An emergency landing zone was set up near the road’s intersection with CR 422, and he was airlifted to North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo. Efforts to learn his condition weren’t successful.

Investigating deputy Billy Johnson said Gates used a cell phone to call his mother after the crash, but wasn’t able to give her a location. She then located her son and called authorities about 10:14 p.m. The deputy believes the crash took place about an hour beforehand.

Gates was alone when he was found. No charges have been filed at this time, and the wreck remains under investigation, Johnson said.
