DULUTH, GA – Bertha Larette McQuary Griffin, 94, died Friday, May 22, 2009, at her home. A native of Houston, she was born November 6, 1914 in Chickasaw County, MS, to William Jesse McQuary and Nettie Lancaster McQuary. She was a retired housewife and quilter. Before retirement, she was an active member of Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church where she taught the ladies sunday school class for many years.
Services were held Monday, May 25, 2009 at Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church with Bro. Danny Bryant officiating. Burial was at Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church Cemetery.
Survivors include two grand daughters, Judy Dobbs Pittman (George Edgar), Cheryl Ann Dobbs Pittman (Edward); one grand daughter in law, Charlene Dobbs; six great grandchildren, Stephen Jones (Sabrina), Angela Strange (Jason), Neal Jones (Grace), Justin Dobbs (Megan), Kendall Pittman and Logan Pittman; three great great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Thomas Edward Griffin; one daughter, Burna Lee Dobbs, one grandson, Robert Douglas Dobbs and one great grandson, Brett Dobbs.
Memorial Funeral Home in Houston was in charge of arrangements.
Ludie M. Moore
HOUSTON – Ludie M. Moore, 76, died Mnday, May 11, 2009 at Trace Regional Hospital in Houston. She was born July 8, 1932 to Jessie and Irene Clark Pettit and was a native of Chickasaw County. She was a housewife and a member of the Thorn Church of God.
Services were held Thursday, May 14, 2009 at Thorn Church of God with Bro. Arnold Amason officiating. Interment followed in the Ellzey Cemetery in Vardaman. Southern Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include her husband, David Moore of Houston; two daughter, Helen Francis Arrant and husband, Ernie, of Elkton, MD, and Linda Diane Landers and husband, Kent, of Corinth; two sons, David Louis Moore and James Stephen Moore, both of Houston; one sister, Anne Griffin of Bruce; 13 grandchildren; eight great-grandchidren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers; one sister, Ruth Ann Moore.
Maenette Baggett
HOUSTON – Maenette Nabors Baggett, 89, died Wednesday, May 20, 2009, at her home in Houston. She was born July 11, 1919 in Houston. She was a homemaker and a Methodist.
Services were held Sunday, May 24, 2009 at Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Paul Childress officiating. Burial was held Tuesday, May 26, 2009 at Machpelah Cemetery in Pascagoula, MS.
Survivors include one daughter, Ann King of Pensacola, FL; one grandson, David King of Pensacola, FL; two sisters, Inez Vanlandingham (Leland Foster) of Houston and Kathryn Tanner (Bill) of Jackson; one sister-in-law, Dorothy Nabors of Trebloc, MS.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Vilas Kincaid Baggett; two daughters, Teresa and Kathy Baggett; her parents, Louis Braxton Nabors and Nellie Lee Porter Nabors; and one brother, T. J. Nabors.
Memorial Funeral Home in Houston was in charge of arrangements.
Faye B. Beckham
WOODLAND – Ida Faye Boswell Beckham, 75, died Monday, May 18, 2009, at her home in Woodland. She was born April 7, 1934, in Starkville to Rupert Dean Boswell and Mary Ellis Boswell. She was a retired licensed practical nurse for Trace Regional Hospital and a member of Woodland First Baptist Church.
Services were held Wednesday, May 20, 2009 at Houston Funeral Home with the Rev. Jack Inmon officiating. Burial followed in Woodland Cemetery.
Survivors include two daughters, Susan McBride of Kosciusko and Mary Ruth Tutor (Danny) of Vardaman; one son, Dan Beckham of Woodland; three stepchildren, Patricia Davis and Jimmy Beckham of Clearwater, Fla., and Jeff Beckham of Pensacola, Fla.; four sisters, Ruth Alice Bell and Elizabeth B. Bobbitt of Mount Pleasant, Mary Inez Beall of Snellville, Ga., and Arrie Ann Busby of Biggersville; three brothers, Rupert Dean Boswell of Fort Collins, Colo., and Henry Hardey and Frank Ellis Boswell of Mt. Pleasant; four grandchildren, Kimberly Morgan, Kayla Coplin, Daniel Wayne Beckham and Charlotte McBride; and four stepgrandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William H. Beckham, and a brother, Jessie Bryan Boswell.
Pallbearers were John Dendy, Jerry Walls, Barry Dendy, Jimmy Sanderson and Mary Ann Sanderson.
Martha McClendon
OKOLONA – Martha amp”Sugamp” McClendon, 67, died Sunday, May 17, 2009, at the North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo. She was the daughter of the late Fettie Moore and Addine Ware Judd. She attended Mt. Moriah School in Okolona and was a member of Jolly Chapel M.B. Church. She enjoyed cooking, eating and sitting on the porch.
Services were held Sunday, May 24, 2009 at Jolly Chapel M.B. Church in Okolona. The Rev. Chester McNairy officiated. Burial was in Okolona Cemetery. Kenneth I. Roberson Funeral Home of Pontotoc was in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include six daughters, Glender (Greg) Payne of Verona, Brenda Swing, Mary Ellis and Renae (Gerald) Coggins, all of Okolona, Gaynell McClendon of Shannon and Sheila (Tyrone) Collins of Tupelo; one son, Waver C. McClendon Jr. of Okolona; four sisters, Margie (John) Townsend of Okolona, Rena (Riley) Wallace of Van Vleet, Georgianna Harvey and Linda (Kerry) Edwards of Verona; one brother, Obbie Moore of Okolona; a grandson raised as a son, Chris Buchanan; 20 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Tim Buchanan; two sisters, Mary Lee Parker and Lillie amp”Sisamp” Stanfield; and a great granddaughter, Brittany Ellis.
John Sargent
OKOLONA – John Gaither amp”Sonamp” Sargent died Monday, May 18, 2009, at Grenada Lake Medical Center. He was born April 6, 1933, to Zettie Sargent Jackson. He was reared by his grandparents, the late David and Mattie Sargent. He took care and responsibility for the family’s farm, and he retired from the Federal Warehouse Compress and Rose Hill Manufacturing Co. in Okolona. A loving and caring individual, he gave his life to Christ at an early age and joined Mt. Pisgah United Methodist Church.
Services were held Saturday, May 23, 2009 at Mt. Pisgah United Methodist Church in Okolona with the Rev. William Givhan officiating. Burial was Sunday, May 24, 2009 at Pleasant Grove Cemetery. N.L. Jones amp& Son Funeral Directors of Tupelo was in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include two brothers, Victor James Jackson and Marco Jackson of Chicago; two nieces, Victoria Lockhart and Killian Jackson; three nephews, Victor Lamont Jackson, Marco Rambus Jackson Jr. and Marlon Rambus Jackson; five special cousins and caregivers, Sarah (Watsie) Jenkins, Elizabeth (Charley) Jenkins, Eddie (Judy) Moore Jr., Zettie Johnson and Teresa Price; a host of cousins.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents and a cousin, Mattie Ford.
Lora Belle Barker
HOULKA – Lora Belle Barker, 85, died Saturday, May 22, 2009, at Darlington Oaks Hospice in Verona after a brief illness. She was born April 11, 1924, to the late James and Maudie Cruse. She was a lifelong resident of Chickasaw County. She was a seamstress for Seville Furniture Company and attended the Church of God of Prophecy. She enjoyed fishing, playing bunko and bingo and going to the casinos.
Services were held Monday, Mayu 25, 2009 at the Lee Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. David Laman officiating. Burial was in Boone’s Chapel Cemetery. Lee Memorial Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include two daughters, Jackie (Charles) Reed and Deborah Barker, both of Houlka; one sister, Birdie Phillips of Okolona; four grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; 14 great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jack P. Barker; one grandchild, Timothy Charles Reed; two great-grandchildren, Christopher Culp and Lindsey Diane Reed; three brothers; and seven sisters.
Pallbearers were Jimmy Robbins, J.R. Robbins, Joey Hollimon, Mitchell Hollimon, Glen May and Shane May.
