Dump your old paint, batteries and more

OXFORD – Half-empty cans of paint, used motor oil and bald tires are just a few of the dozens of items that residents can lawfully and safely dispose of the next two Saturdays.
On April 18 the event will be at the Oxford Conference Center (Highway 7 at Sisk Avenue) with a repeat performance on April 25 at the Lee County Agri-Center in Verona. Hours are 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. both days.
Three Rivers Solid Waste Management Authority, Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality and county and municipal entities will sponsor the events, which are open without charge to residents of counties within the Three Rivers area – Calhoun, Itawamba, Lafayette, Lee, Monroe, Pontotoc and Union.
“We want to give residents in our area a safe, easy way to dispose of hazardous waste instead of putting them in waterways, on the ground or in standard landfills,” said Three Rivers Project Specialist Casey Franks.
The list of accepted items includes tires, household cleaners, batteries, lubricants, liquid fuels, computers and electronic waste, garden chemicals, paints, photographic chemicals, medicines and appliances, among others.
Liquids, powders and other substances should be brought in their original, sealed containers if possible and should be carried away from the passenger compartments of vehicles.
It is also important to know what not to bring.
Items that can be safely landfilled such as old furniture or roofing shingles will not be accepted.
Any biological or infectious materials, explosives, radioactive materials or unknown substances also will be turned away.
