DuPree certified as mayor of Hattiesburg

HATTIESBURG (AP) — The votes have all been tallied in Hattiesburg and this time, both candidates agree: Mayor Johnny DuPree has won a fourth term over challenger Dave Ware.

The Hattiesburg American reports (http://hatne.ws/15DOz1B) that the final margin was 202 votes — 7,507 for DuPree, 7,305 for Ware.

DuPree’s supporters gathered at the City Hall steps on Saturday, chanting “Who dat!” and “Four more years!”

Ware congratulated DuPree and said he won’t contest the results.

He challenged a 37-vote loss in June; all 580 absentee ballots were thrown out.

Federal and state observers oversaw Tuesday’s voting and the count that ended Saturday.

Ware said he decided against challenging the results both because of the increased oversight and because he doesn’t want to “bog down” the city in another election fight.

Most of this week’s election train wreck occurred with Delbert and his folks overseeing the process. The do-over was as messy as the original, only this time there were more observers. Maybe the state should be educating local election committees and pollworkers on their responsibilities–which would’ve prevented much of the BS in both these elections. But those concepts are apparently difficult and voter ID will fix everything.
