OXFORD – Sam Haskell III has brought stars like Ray Romano, Whoopi Goldberg and Dolly Parton to the Magnolia State for “Stars Over Mississippi.”
Now, he’s taking Mississippi to the world thanks to his new memoir, “Promises I Made My Mother.”
It’s the story of Haskell’s rise from a young television fan in Amory to vice president and worldwide head of television at William Morris Agency.
Along the way, he relied on the principles he learned from his mother, Mary Kirkpatrick Haskell.
“This book is something that has been on my heart for years,” said Haskell, 53, who’s retired from William Morris. “It’s something I thought I would do when I was an old man. But I had such encouragement from so many people to go ahead and do it now.”
The book will be released nationwide on Tuesday, but there will be a pre-release signing party from 2 to 4:30 p.m. Sunday at Shadowlawn, the home of Patty and Will Lewis. It’s located at 712 South 11th St. in Oxford.
Haskell’s proceeds will go to charity, and Sunday’s signing will benefit the University of Mississippi’s Ford Center for the Performing Arts.
“I’m in crazy, crazy mode,” Haskell said, “but it’s great because people are interested in the book.”
In addition to a 56-city tour, several high-profile television appearances are planned:
– Tuesday – “The Today Show.”
– Wednesday – “The CBS Early Show.”
– Thursday – “Fox and Friends.”
– May 4 – “Larry King Live.”
– May 5 – “The Tavis Smiley Show.”
– May 7 – “The Bonnie Hunt Show.”
– May 7 – “The 700 Club.”
The biannual “Stars Over Mississippi” concerts that drew Romano, Goldberg and Parton to Amory have come to an end, but you’ll find glamour during a “Celebration Gala” on May 16 at Amory High School.
The event will feature Michael Feinstein, Debbie Allen, Doris Roberts, Lucie Arnaz, Sela Ward, Jill Conner Browne and more. Proceeds will benefit the Mary Kirkpatrick Scholarship Foundation.
“They get the book with their ticket,” Haskell said, “and I’ll stay all night and sign them all.”
