After many months of review by the United States Postal Service, the decision has been made to keep Ecru Post Office.
After thorough review, the USPS made the decision that there was enough mail volume coming through to warrant keeping the post office open.
Hours will be minimally reduced, with the opening time being cut back only by one hour. New hours will be 9:00 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Saturdays will remain unchanged at 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. The blue boxes out front will still be picked up at the same times. The change in hours should become effective in late January or early February.
This announcement was made to a crowd of concerned citizens at last week’s town hall meeting during which USPS Representative Dana Atmos addressed the issue.
“The postal service has been losing mail volume after 9/11, after the anthrax scare, and especially with internet usage going up,” Atmos said. “There hasn’t been enough revenue coming in to support infrastructure.”
The ongoing situation has resulted in discontinuance studies in small towns across the nation to determine actual workload hours and how post offices can most efficiently serve customers.
Surveys mailed to households in Ecru were uses to get feedback from the community. Of the 307 surveys sent back in by residents 281 preferred keeping Ecru Post Office open with possible realigned hours. Only 6 of those responding said they would not mind if it closed entirely. Ecru resident Judy Mitchell was pleased with the decision to keep the post office open.
“We’re so glad. We didn’t want to go through having to get our address changed. It would have been a hassle for a lot of people.” Mayor Tom Todd agreed. “The most important thing I wanted to hear at this meeting was that our post office is not going to close. I’m happy to hear it.”
