The Memorial Day weekend claimed eight in traffic accidents across the state this year.
The crashes were in Troop D, based in Greenwood, Troop E, based in Batesville, and Troop H, in Meridian, said Trooper Ray Hall.
Fifty percent of the fatalities were unbuckled, Hall said. Last year there was only one fatality over the Memorial Day weekend.
Killed in the wrecks were Larubie McCullum, 21, of Louin, in a Jasper County accident; Steven Coward, 32, of Scobey, in a Grenada County accident; John Sala, 59, of Gonalez, La., in a Yalobusha County accident and Daniel Mack Sr., 65, of Collins, in a Holmes County. There was another wreck in Clarke County, which killed four people, including two children, and their names have not been released.
All of the accidents are still under investigation.
There were 92 traffic accidents statewide during the Memorial Day weekend.
The Highway Patrol issued more than 4,600 citations, including 382 seatbelt violations and 117 DUI arrests.
