Escaped inmate dies of self-inflicted wound

ACHERMAN — Choctaw County Coroner Keith Coleman says autopsy results show an escaped inmate who attacked an Ackerman police officer and stole her car died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Coleman told The Clarion-Ledger he could not release any further details of the autopsy.

Ackerman Police Chief Tanya Burton says 27-year-old Bobby Fair attacked a police officer Wednesday as he was on his way into a courtroom.

Burton says Fair acquired a second vehicle, and several agencies set up a perimeter and waited for him to come through on surrounding roadways Wednesday night.

After Fair ran one roadblock on the Natchez Trace Parkway near French Camp, Burton says he pulled over at the next one and exchanged gunfire with officers.

Fair was in custody for two counts of armed robbery.
