Ex-trooper Hughes asks for second trial delay

OXFORD – Ex-trooper Chris Hughes of Tupelo wants to delay his federal civil rights trial set to begin Jan. 14.
This week, Hughes’ attorneys asked again that the U.S. District Court delay the trial date to give them more time to review new material and prepare his defense.
Hughes, 40, was indicted Oct. 25 on one count that while he was a state trooper he deprived a woman of her civil rights during an alleged beating in the Lee County Jail more than five years ago.
Hughes pleaded not guilty and is free on bond. His first trial date was set for Dec. 17.
A few weeks ago, his attorneys asked the government to give them notice of prosecutors intend to use “previous bad acts” as evidence against Hughes.
