TUPELO – A former volunteer firefighter, William Cody Lambert of Guntown, has been indicted on charges of capital murder and arson in Lee and Union counties.
According to court documents, a Union County grand jury indicted Lambert on counts of first-degree arson and capital murder in the September death of 88-year-old Myrtle Mae Owen, who died in one of the arson fires in the Alpine community.
In Lee County, Lambert faces six counts of arson in the fire that damaged St. Thomas Catholic Church in Saltillo, four homes and a bale of hay.
Lambert had been a member of the Cedar Hill and Guntown volunteer fire departments and was among those who responded to the fires.
Lambert remains in the Union County jail without bond.
